Somatic Experiencing® (SE™)

Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work.
The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.

somatic experiencing therapy Westchester County NY and Fairfield County CTIn today’s society, trauma can become an almost expected consequence of living. With proper help, support and education, however, we do not have to remain in a traumatized state.

Dr. Peter Levine, the founder of the healing technique called Somatic Experiencing®, defines trauma in perhaps the broadest manner yet: when our ability to respond to a perceived threat is in some way overwhelmed (see traumahealing.org for more information). The cumulative effects of this overwhelm create a constellation of stress related symptoms.

Dr. Levine’s work spans over 45 years of research and is ground-breaking in its discovery that trauma lies more in the nervous system than in the event and can be resolved there as well by restoring balance and homeostasis to the organism.

Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) can be helpful if:

  • You have symptoms of post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD)
  • You feel overly sensitive to certain stimuli and under-reactive or “numb” to others
  • You are experiencing cycles of panic, depression or fears that don’t make sense to you
  • You have trouble being fully in the present moment because of memories or symptoms

Somatic Experiencing® (SE™)

SE™ is another form of trauma therapy aimed at focusing on a “felt sense” (noticing, tracking and highlighting certain body sensations) as a way to re-set the nervous system, “re-negotiate” trauma rather than “re-live” it and alleviate many stress-related symptoms through the restoration of equal access to our own survival responses (fight, flight and freeze).

SE™ is a psycho-biological method that can help us to reclaim our natural ability to regulate our body’s functioning after many types of traumatic stressors (abuse/neglect, accidents, falls, natural disasters, medical procedures, developmental or shock traumas, etc).

I can gently guide you through a series of exercises that can allow completion of “unfinished” involuntary movements, discharge the body’s held energy and reintegrate a variety of coping resources. I completed the three year SE training program and have extensive training in the field of trauma recovery and will combine a variety of techniques in response to your unique treatment needs.
